Description

This wonderful image of M33 is actually comprised of two different imaging sessions at different focal lengths (400mm & 600mm), of which I integrated together in Adobe Photoshop using smart object blending mode. The outcome is a truly breathtaking rendition of one of the most captivating objects in our night sky.

A post-processing task I frequently encounter when working with astro images is color correction. My images tend to exhibit hue shift of many colors, perhaps attributed to light pollution or the way my ZWO ASI183 renders tones. For instance, in this photo of M33, the nebulosity surrounding the spiral arms appeared violet initially, however, many other images of M33 showcase a more subtle, pale-blue hue for the galaxy.

Nonetheless what I'm really excited about is combining imaging data from year-to-year now that I have a reliable imaging setup where I can consistently capture near-identical data sets time and time again.

If anyone is curious as to why I blended two different focal length stacked images together, it is because I wasn't too pleased with the quality of stars in my longer focal length image and also I wanted to use a widefield version to create an animation for instagram, therefore I set out to capture another session at 400mm and combine them.

Title: 2024 Re-Edit

Description: I shifted the colors to move the blue towards the purple and magenta hue versus the previous cyan. I also used color range select in Photoshop to desaturate or (neutralize) the background, a trick which I hadn't ever considered in my processing workflow up until now. I also used the same method to selective reduce noise on only the shadows creating a smooth sky.
